karen klucowicz

Artist member since 2023
Hamilton, Ontario

Karen Klucowicz is a Canadian artist creating concept-driven, bold, figurative abstract art. Her art focuses on the strength of individuals and how that strength affects relationships.

Ending a tumultuous relationship, Karen survived being held at gunpoint and escaped a life of tremendous highs and lows. The concepts of her paintings all stem from recognizing the strength it took to end that cycle, and a willingness to share her story. Karenโ€™s paintings evoke emotional (and sometimes physical) responses that often surprise her collectors with body-positive images, flesh tones that are not culture specific, expressive colours and texture.

While Klucowicz has drawn and painted since her earliest recollections, her creative career began as an interior designer (Humber College). Years later, she returned to study at the Ontario College of Art & Design (Toronto). In 2016, Klucowicz made a dedicated return to her first love of fine art. Building a full body of work, she was represented by Raven Art Gallery (2018) until they closed due to the pandemic (2020). Her studio is located in the DyeWorks Building at The Cotton Factory in Hamilton, Ontario.

Q+A

Everyone should know about

I don't function well without coffee and quiet in the morning! It's my time to meditate, plan and explore my state of being.

Why is it important for people to have art in their home or life?

Live the power of art. It is my belief that art has great ability to motivate people to communicate. With all of the visual distractions in our world, we need landing points for time out โ€” to contemplate, initiate dialogue, and our likes and dislikes of art offer insight to others about ourselves.

During my breaks, I tend to ...

Take creative retreats. In Ontario and internationally, I escape for a few weeks to focus on painting. It's amazing to absorb yourself in a culture and allow those influences to permeate your process.

Favourite medium

My favourite medium is oil paint. It offers fantastic opportunities of manipulation through blending, texture and colour hits.

What kind of artwork do you have in your home?

My personal art collection ranges from traditional to abstract street art. My fave is a print by Arshile Gorky (abstract expressionist) and a bronze sculpture of abstract forms that I purchased to celebrate the sale of my home, and my return to this crazy art world full-time.

In a previous life I was (a) ...

An interior designer and before that a marketing and branding exec in advertising. I believe both of these careers inform my art today through storytelling and colour creative.
